Mthunzi Mchunu 1988/07/10 is a South African born guitarist.
Mthunzi started playing the guitar in his early years when exposed to jazz by a family member and practically hasn't stopped since. With a back ground in music from the acclaimed U.K.Z.N School of Music under the direction of Demi Fernandes, specializing in Electro acoustic (Studio) and Music education and performance he holds credentials of the highest honour a (B.prac Mus.) degree and other accolades that many look up to from an academic point of view. Although rooted in Jazz and Gospel, stylistic versatility is one of Mthunzi's passions and he is not a purist by any means.
In the time that he has been in the music industry, he has toured with groups, been featured on T.V., recorded with many artists and has also played with South African greats and emerging artists alike. The likes of Sibongile Khumalo, Robbie Malinga (Recording), Joocy (Afrotainment), Babo/Sgwili, Thulani "Ga" Ndlela, U-turn, Patrick Duncan (Joyous celebration), Xolisa Dlamini and guitar legend Gerald Sloan are but a few. Mthunzi has been on countless opening acts for national and international artists e.g 340ml, Zahara, Heels over head (SAMA nominees) and has headlined many private functions for various occasions from King Zwelithini and President Zuma to KZN premiere Dr. Zweli Mkhize and countless other officials. Apart from this Mthunzi is the guitar player for the UKZN big band, an honorary position for most musicians, and leads the band for the annual Original Material Awards held at the Playhouse alongside Gagasi FM radio sensation DJ Lab.
Having played in all of South Africas major festivals from Splashy fen, Grahamstown Jazz festival, Midmar music festival, Durban international blues festival to MTN jazz festival it goes without saying that travelling is not an issue. Locally he is a regular feature in all the major music venues from The Rainbow, Bat centre, Royal house of Jazz, Shadows jazz club, Bertoua ect.
On a day to day basis Mthunzi is an active musician/producer and educator, he is also part of one of Durbans' busiest bands 5th Season which has done many functions, private events and club dates for various different bodies. Collectively they also session and function as a rhythm section for many soloists and feature regularly in and around the greater KZN area as well as nationwide.
Brayden is an exciting bass player who has a unique approach to playing bass. He was selected as a finalist in the Yamaha Young Talent Competition 2010 and was the only bass player to appear as a soloist, proving that he has a unique musical approach to playing bass which is rare and proves to be vital in a trio and quartet formats. Besides being an asset to larger combos, he continues to take the small ensemble frontier to new heights adding an undeniable amount of colour and tonality to the overall sound.
Having had a good background in music and starting early on he has been involved in many shows and productions ranging from theatre to corporate events. He joined the UKZN School of Music to further his understanding and musicianship under the competent staff of the bass faculty at the school of music. He has also performed for the UKZN Big Band. Brayden took part in The Original Material Awards 2012 at the Playhouse in Durban.
